Rapid DNA immunochromatographic assay for detection of toxic Aristolochia species, the plants responsible for aristolochic acid nephrotoxic

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are strong carcinogens which have caused dietary supplements containing Aristolochia plants to be discontinued. To protect the consumer from health risk associated with Aristolochia contamination and support the regulation of Aristolochia-free products, PCR coupled with lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (PCR-LFA) has been designed. The PCR-LFA which is specific to the nucleotide signature in the rbcL DNA region of Aristolochia plants was developed to detect Aristolochia herbs and related herbal products. Positive results for Aristolochia occur when the three pink lines are clearly appeared on the lateral flow strip and the result can be detected by naked eye. The PCR-LFA has high sensitivity for detecting DNA of Aristolochia plants at the concentration as low as 0.01 ng.
