Method for obtaining hydroxyapatite scaffolds with predetermined physico-chemical characteristics for major bone reconstruction

The patent includes the procedure for producing a hydroxyapatite-based bone reconstruction material with a predetermined hydroxyapatite-HAP/ tricalcium phosphate- TCP. The procedure include a preliminary phase of preparing the apatite raw materials by bovine bone deproteinisation through thermal methods: repeated boiling in water followed by heat treatment at 400-500°C, for 2-4 hours, in an electrical oven, in air atmosphere, with continuous airing. The material characteristics of the apatite raw materials are further refined by thermal treatment in electrical oven, in air atmosphere at 800- 1200°C, for 2-6 hours. After the thermal treatment, the materials are milled in agate ball mills for 2-6 hours and granulometrically sorted by vibratory sieving in a range of 200 - 20μm. The hydroxyapatite powders prepared as described above are mixed and homogenized with an aqueous sodium pyrophosphate solution (0.1 - 0.5 molar concentration) in a ratio established based on the required HAP/TCP ratio. The treated powders are further pressed in cylindrical shapes with 10-50 mm diameter, using 10- 500MPa pressing forces, based on the porosity and mechanical characteristics requirements for the finished product. The finished product is achieved by sintering at 700°-1300°C for 2-6 hours, in air/argon atmosphere, dried at room temperature for 24-240 hours and mechanically machined by drilling on axial direction (square with the circular surface) and on radial direction, for achieving a holes with 1-3 mm diameters, and with the distance between any two holes between 1-3 mm.
